What Happens After Your Photography Session is Done

Updated: Aug 14, 2022

When you book a photography session, chances are you’ll be focused on the session itself. It’s exciting to get dressed up for photos with your new baby, prep the nursery or another area of your home, and pose for the camera. But after your session is done and the photography equipment is packed up and gone, it can feel like a bit of waiting game. Often clients ask how long it will take for them to receive their images after the session. I know it’s hard to wait, but I promise, it will be worth it! Here’s a little peek into what happens after your photography session is done:

Behind the Scenes

Coming to your home and capturing those beautiful, intimate photos of your family is only the first step for me. After your session, I spend hours editing your photos.

Before: You can see baby girl has some flaky skin going on.

After: All smoothed out!

As you can see, there’s no need for you to worry about things like baby acne! Yes, I can absolutely fix that. That’s one of the many reasons I recommend hiring a professional newborn photographer rather than just having a friend or family member take some snapshots. With a professional photographer, you’ll get professional results.

I take hundreds of pictures during a shoot. Some of these are very similar, because I want to make sure we get the perfect shot. But there’s no need for you to get caught up in the minutiae of choosing between all of those photos. I make sure you have a curated collection of only the very best to choose from.

Photography is a process of capturing memories in a single instant, but in order to really make those memories shine, I take time afterward to go through each photo one by one, meticulously making tiny adjustments to make sure there are no distractions and that every detail of your image is perfect.

High-end editing, like evening out baby’s skin tone and getting rid of newborn acne and skin flakes, or fixing backgrounds. For example, you can see in the before and after shots below, from a Hawaii beach maternity session, that I brightened up the photo to put the focus on our gorgeous mama-to-be’s face, while still making sure that even the background details were clear and beautiful.

Average Wait Time

Because the editing process is so in-depth, I advise clients to allow fifteen business days after their session before they can expect their images and gallery to be complete. I’m a perfectionist, and I’m not happy with my editing until I know that I’ve done my absolute best and I’m confident that you will love the results! These photos are treasures that you will be able to look back on for the rest of your lives. They need to be perfect!

What You Can Do While You’re Waiting for Your Photos

I know three weeks can feel like a long time to wait, even when you know there’s an excellent reason for it. Luckily, you can stay busy in the meantime by planning what you’ll do with your finished images when they finally arrive.

Photos are lovely, and your finished photos are going to be absolutely stunning because of all that detailed work that’s going on behind the scenes. And that means you’ll want to share them with others and display them in your home for you and your family to enjoy. I offer archival-quality wall art and albums as part of my packages to ensure you have options for displaying your photos after receiving them. Spend some time daydreaming and plan out how you’ll use your photos. Where do you want to hang that wall art? Where would you keep your baby’s photo album? Or how many prints would look best in the nursery?

Doing this kind of planning is fun and makes it even more exciting as you look forward to being able to hold the finished product, personalized with your very own memories, in your hands.

At Last! Your Finished Images are Ready!

It’s so exciting when the big day finally arrives! You’ll receive a curated, professionally edited selection of images and have online access to your private gallery. You also receive a personal mobile app for easy sharing your gallery with friends and family. You will have so much fun going through your images and choosing your own personal favorites to use as wall art or in an album. I purposefully make sure you get to choose your photos at your leisure, in the comfort of your own home. Viewing those finished pictures for the first time is deeply personal and can also be a very sweet and moving experience. I want to ensure that experience, just as much as the session itself, is also yours to treasure.

Once you’ve decided on your images, we’ll get to work creating your products (wall art or album, or maybe a combination, depending on which package you’ve ordered). All my products are archival quality and guaranteed not to fade for 100 years. Where you get your photos printed really does determine their look and quality. I want your family to be able to cherish these pictures down through the generations, so I’m committed to delivering only products and prints that are made to stand the test of time.

Are you ready to book your session and capture your family’s memories? Take a look at my services, from newborn (portrait and lifestyle options), maternity, family, or baby and child, to determine which type of session is the right fit for you. (If you’re expecting a little one and are trying to choose between lifestyle and newborn portraits, I’ve got a helpful blog post that can help you make your decision.) And of course, if you have any questions along the way, please don’t hesitate to reach out for guidance. I’d be delighted to help!
